Last weekend I had a solid kayak mission with a 3 a.m. start and an hour-long paddle in the dark. After spending some time trying to catch livebaits, I spotted a massive school of kingfish sitting right underneath me. I dropped a jig as fast as I could, and on the second drop I was hooked up.
The fish fought hard with some powerful runs, and after a short but intense battle I managed to land it. A solid kingfish, measuring around 100 cm and estimated at 11–13 kg. Caught on a JC Jig in glow green/gold, paired with 100 lb Berkley Vanish leader—which was absolutely needed, as the fight took me straight into the reef.
